I was going into the video studio to do a series of demos for our anti bullying program, Breaking Out of the World Game. And I was in a panic. I felt like a total failure. I didn’t know my script (which I have taught in nearly 500 hundred schools).

Like the Magic Eight Ball where words keep surfacing out of the black ink, my feelings and thoughts exploded out of the dark onto my mental screen. My world spun out of control. ”Not good enough!” “I can’t do it!” “I feel lost.” ”Where do I start?”

Here I was touting mind management and I couldn’t even manage one thought. What happened!? I hit the wall and I found myself back in my own ground zero.

The only viable thought in the whole thing was really, “Where do I start?” But it took me a while to get there.

When I finally did get there, I took a proactive stance. I went back to the creativity template I had burned into my mental hard drive 30 years ago.

1. Preparation – Engage in the process. Be willing to concentrate fully on the subject. Struggle with it. Visualize it. This feeds everything into the sub-conscious mind. (In my case I had to review the material and think deeply about how to do the video without an audience.)
2. Incubation –  Let it all go. Relax. Change the subject. Play and sleep usually work for me. (In this case, I went to bed. I was going into production the next day.)
3. Breakthrough – This usually comes as an ‘AHA’ experience, like Archimedes ‘Eureka’! This breakthrough cannot be forced and arrives in its own time.

In my case, I got up on the day of the shoot and I was in ‘the zone’. I had an extremely successful day in the video studio.

But I could have done it without all of the panic and the negative self-talk. I could have had more wisdom about it and caught it by the tail before it caught me.

I was reminded of Ashley in The Operator’s Manual for Planet Earth. I had fallen asleep and lost the plot again!

I’ve recommitted to my initial goal. Staying awake on Planet Earth is a challenge, especially when the old deep habits kick in!

It was pretty amazing. The room was in an active state and within one minute of ‘breath in – be still, breath out – let go’ the entire energetic field shifted. The feeling was palpable from high energy moving in all directions to a sense of stillness, presence and focus.

I have  since received a tremendous amount of feedback from these and others who are using the One Minute Meditation. Here’s what one person communicated…

“When I feel stressed or I’m beginning to feel edgy, I turn my attention inward for a moment, take a deep breath, and say the words you taught us – ‘be still, let go’. So with all of this feedback and after much consideration, I have decided to share a few more of these short one or two minute meditations. These are One Minute Meditations that I use and they come from my private tool chest. Each fulfills a different purpose, but they will all strengthen your mental focus, enhance the energy of the heart and amp up the power of your intention.

Just as we are learning to do core training for the body, these short meditations are like core training for the heart and soul. Each meditation will help you shift your awareness, energize your presence in the moment and change all the moments that follow.

I have no speech, no written words. I haven’t got the ability to translate my feelings into words. I just personally want to thank the man who changed my life in a very personal and profound way.

In 1984, the year of the first Apple computer, my dad sent me a first generation Mac. I was living and working In Reno, Nevada. When this large package arrived on my door step, I didn’t know what it was or what to do with it.

In fact, I opened it and left it standing in the middle of my living room floor for almost two weeks. I remember pacing, looking down at it sitting there in it’s plastic wrapping on the floor, wondering what I would ever do with such a thing.

Periodically, dad would call and ask me how I liked the gift he sent. “It’s a computer,” he said. “plug it in. Use it. You’ll love it.”

I finally took it from its wrapping one day and started to touch it, slowly at first, afraid that it would break. But soon, I forgot the fear and it magnetized me with its wonder.

I have written 4 books on the Mac since that time, an entire K-12 curriculum, stories in Chicken Soup for the Soul, and coauthored many books with such men as Steven Covey and Jack Canfield. Steve Jobs released the creativity in so many of us around the globe.

All I can say is thank you, Steven Jobs. Every Job you came to do has been done. You have transformed the lives of all of us and the world as a whole!Share and Enjoy:
