I have found that the power of the heros’ tale transcends age and time. Students are transfixed when I share Lovell’s story or tell them how my friend Lanson Kupau rose out of the depths of poverty to become a lawyer and a judge.

But my question today is whether or not you are using the power of stories to the fullest extent with our students. If you are, that’s great!

Here are a few tips to increase your story-power and make your stories come to life in the minds and hearts of your students:

1. Make it Simple - Know your audience and target the outcome you want from the story. At each step along the way ask yourself, “What’s the point?” Then make sure that you are getting your point across.
2. Make it Concrete - Use sensory images, facial expressions, and clear descriptions to bring the story to life. Don’t tell about it. Involve the audience in the events and action. Through sensory rich images that include visual, auditory, and olfactory sensations engage the audience in what the main character is experiencing.
3. Make it Emotional - We are feeling beings. Emotions move people to action. Communicate the feelings of the hero through body language, facial expression, vocal tone and pacing. Bring the audience with you so they feel what the main character(s) is feeling.
4. Wrap With a High - End with the great victory or victories that the hero experienced and the lessons gained along the way.

Finally, link the story to an open discussion. Ask the class to write a list of the lessons they gained from the story. This can be done either with the whole class, in a team or individually. Then discuss the lessons that can be learned with everyone!Share and Enjoy:

After much discussion, a hundred e-mails back and forth with Lynne (my business partner), and a series of dialogues as to the where, when, what and how of it the date was set. It was decided that we would do it in the islands and the stage was set.

They arrived over the weekend and the 6 and a half day program commences today. John Faulkner came in on Saturday with his wife, Jill. Louise and Erin arrived on Sunday.

This is an exciting event as up until now I have done all Australian training in Australia. This is the first time I am hosting Aussies to Hawaii to take a training program.

I have to admit, it was amazing to observe the power of the team’s intention as it was turned into action! They asked for the training, stuck with their decision, followed through with all the paper work and planning, and are now in the islands ready to begin!

Then I looked at a recent picture of him. The light had become an ember, a dull remnant of what used to be. When did the light go out? I wondered.

I had to ask myself, “What happened? What dimmed the light?”

Then I went to teach a class of high school students. I greeted them at the door as I always do. This time, however, I stretched the moment long enough to look more deeply into their eyes. And there it was staring back at me… a relic, a remnant, a reminder of what had been or could yet be…

In that moment I felt the meaning of the words, ‘the eyes are the mirrors of the soul’ more poignantly than ever before. I took a deep breath, stilled my heart and deepened my awareness. The light in some eyes seemed to burn a bit more brightly than in others.

That day I shared the story of Lovell Harris. Born into a family of six boys, Lovell rose from poverty to become one of the finest counselors in the U.S. Navy. The story of his trials and tribulations his struggles, defeats and attainments along the way held the students spellbound.

At the close of the session as  the students shared their commitment to action, I could see a spark in their eyes again. Most left the class inspired, wanting to achieve more and become better human beings.

Later that night I was reading The Innovation Secrets of Steven Jobs by Carmen Gallo. In it she expands on 7 secrets, the first of which is passion. She quotes Jobs as saying to a 2005 class of Stanford students on being fired from his own company in 1985:

“I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

That paragraph spoke to my heart. Our job as educators is to help students find the passion that lights their fire. If Lovell’s story could get students excited then so could stories of other men and women who overcame obstacles to make a contribution to life on Earth.

Below is a site that will give you hundreds of stories of men and women who made a difference to society. Everyone has a story and students are usually fascinated by heroic tales. Many of the stories on this site are teaching stories that will inspire, uplift and give guidance to your students.

Involve students in finding their hero or shero. Then ask them to look up further works on their hero. Have them do a report on how their hero attained success and made a contribution in their chosen field. Ask them to answer the following questions in their report and come in ready to share with the class.

1. Why did you choose the person that you chose?
2. What about their lives spoke to you specifically?
3. What steps did they go through to attain success?
4. What were some of the setbacks along the way?
5. What qualities did they develop in the process?

I loved W. Edward Deming and had the opportunity to spend 4 days of my life in training with him. I realized during that entire time that I was in the presence of a virtual giant.

In the four days I spent with Deming, his presence and his brilliance were palpable. He had a powerful, quick, agile mind and a quick wit even at 94. When challenged by a young man from the floor he responded, “Young man, my product is Japan. What is your product?” The man blanched as Deming continued. “Come with an open mind to learn because my job is done while yours is just beginning.”

Although Deming passed away 11 months after I studied with him, his ideas and his wisdom live in my work to this day. There are four key steps in the Deming process. And they can be applied not just to CEO’s and business people, but by leaders on the campus and teachers in the classroom.

1. Consistency – Be consistent in the delivery of your products and services.
   • Whether you are a leader or a teacher, be consistent in your words. Keep your emotions in tact, consistent and balanced.
2. Trust – Consistency builds trust in the people you serve.
   • If you are a leader, watch the response of those in your team. As a classroom teacher, notice how your students react to you. Protect their dignity by never making them wrong in front of their peers. Acknowledge the difference between an intention and a mistake and then apologize when you make a mistake.
3. Loyalty – As trust is built and stabilized through consistency, loyalty blossoms.
   • Whether you are a campus leader or a leader in the classroom, pay attention the response that you get from those around you. Loyalty is built on trust. Trust is built on consistency. Thus if your people are loyal you have laid the foundation well.
4. Repeat Business – When all of the above factors are in place, people come back for more.
   • Repeat business within the school construct means that your team and your students want more, are willing to give more and do more. They are willing to go the extra mile to support you and/or learn from you.

So how do you build capacity?  All of the results in the Deming model are built on number 1 – consistency. So let’s focus on consistency.

For me, consistency is the hardest mountain to climb. I feel as if I climb it every single day. Plateaus are short lived and only provide a momentary illusory respite. I say illusory because there really is no rest on the journey to become consistent in words and actions.

So here’s the 4 step study guide:

1. Recommit to the goal every morning.
2. Action-Awareness – Practice and observe yourself  during the course of the day. Course correct for greater consistency.
3. Reflect at days end on where you did well and where you would like to improve.

Do the same cycle every day for 30 days and notice how your results improve.Share and Enjoy:

The presentation I did on The Neuro-chemical Signature of Calm (Teaching Centering to Your Students) went wonderfully. We had about 60 people in the room from school administrators to educators and counsellors.
